REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL- (RFP -ETH- 2015 – 9119068)

OPEN for Local and International firm/company

UNICEF Ethiopia Office is seeking Request for Proposal to – Conduct Midline survey for the integrated WASH/MUS/CBN program in Amhara, Oromia, SNNP and Tigray regions

Background:The international literature clearly notes that limited access to adequate services of water supply and sanitation have a significant impact on public health. The international literature notes that multiple arm interventions (i.e. Combined WASH interventions of water supply, water quality, sanitation, improved hygiene practices) have a greater impact on health than single arm interventions (i.e. hand washing alone).[1]

However, the international literature has less evidence on the impact of WASH on child malnutrition. The Lancet Maternal and Child Undernutrition Series estimated that sanitation and hygiene interventions implemented with 99% coverage would reduce diarrhea incidence by 30%, which would in turn decrease the prevalence of stunting by only 2.4%[2]. Humphrey (2009) suggests that a key cause of child undernutrition is a subclinical disorder of the small intestine known as tropical enteropathy.[3]

This evaluation aims at assessing the linkages between WASH and CBN and their relative impacts on child health.

Objectives:to conduct baseline, midline and end-line surveys to evaluate the program performance. At the same time, this assessment is considered an opportunity to gain more insight on the impact of WASH interventions on diarrhoea and stunting.

Expected background and Experience:

Have the capacity to put together a professional team able to carry out multipurpose surveys of similar complexity; and have previous experience in Ethiopia or in other Sub-Saharan countries.
