Ethiopia: Team leader – Publishing and Curation

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Team leader – overseeing Publishing and Curation to provide strategic leadership, develop and implement the Institute’s editorial, production, publishing and curation strategies to help maximize its impact and effectiveness.

The Communications and Knowledge Management team at ILRI provides central leadership in knowledge sharing, communication and information facilities and expertise to ILRI researchers, the organization and its partners. Activities are intended to enhance ILRI’s effectiveness and outcomes through four main activities:

  • Communicate evidence for wider influence—by engaging with decision-makers and other audiences;
  • Translate science-based practices into impact—by communicating research outputs towards potential development outcomes;
  • Link and connect people and knowledge to enrich collaboration, within ILRI and beyond, learning, interaction and exchange;
  • Access, organize and manage, document, publish, communicate and disseminate research knowledge, information and data, products and outputs for wide accessibility and use.

This is an important institutional role supporting CKM and ILRI leadership in the diverse efforts to help achieve ILRI’s strategic influencing, capacity development and science uptake objectives. The publishing, curation, web and designs teams work across ILRI, contributing to institutional and project activities. The teams presently comprise 12 individuals based at ILRI campus in Addis Ababa and Nairobi. The ideal candidate will bring a wide expertise and ability to guide a multi-faceted team as well as depth in any of the substantive areas falling within the terms of reference.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org

Responsibilities:

(1) Management and Leadership

  • Manage assigned staff; facilitating effective teamwork, good communication, and undertaking performance review and planning
  • Lead the publishing, curation and web teams, helping them develop production systems and processes as required
  • Act as a mentor and coach to Communications and Knowledge Management (CKM)staff, especially those with writing and editorial roles
  • Participate in Institute-wide and strategic meetings as appropriate
  • Contribute to the ILRI-wide communications and Knowledge Management Community of Practice (COP) and leadership group, including taking the lead in developing and implementing strategies related to the teams.

(2) Publishing, writing and editing

  • Provide strategic leadership; including in the development of CKM strategies to ensure the institute’s writing, editing and publishing materials are of the highest standard and consistently aligned with institute’s branding
  • Support researchers to synthesize research outputs through high quality writing and editing into a variety of formats designed to communicate to multiple audiences; from policy and impact briefings to short reports, backgrounders and booklets.
  • Coordinate maintenance of style and branding guides for ILRI publications
  • Maintain and manage a cadre of excellent freelance writers, designers, editors, translators and proof-readers for both print and digital products
  • Lead and deliver on the conceptualization, preparation and production of ILRI’s corporate report, calendar and other institutional products
  • Ensure a functional on-line publication tool is available and accessible to ILRI teams

(3) Web and Digital Publishing Platforms

  • Oversee the development of the ILRI websites and blogs in line with strategic goals and institute branding, and provide leadership on changes in this area
  • Ensure ILRI’s website is up-to-date and aligned with audience expectations
  • Ensure ILRI’s blogposts are reviewed and maintained at the highest standards
  • Lead in developing and monitoring editorial standards across the Institute’s digital platforms, ensuring consistency of style, production quality and suitability for audiences

(4) Curation of ILRI Materials

  • Ensure all processes are in place so that ILRI materials are curated, tagged and readily accessible on CGSpace and other appropriate platforms, including the dissemination of such materials
  • Oversight of info Centre functions (journals, working space etc.)

Requirements:

  • Master’s in a relevant discipline e.g. communications, agriculture, development, journalism
  • At least 10 years’ experience in research or development publishing, editing or related areas
  • Experience managing diverse teams across different geographical regions

Post location: The position will be based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Position level: The position level is 5A

Duration: 3 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
