Fondation Hirondelle is collaborating with several health organizations and academic institutions (including Addis Ababa University School of Public Health) in order to develop and pilot test an innovative approach to reduce and prevent intimate partner violence (IPV) using an information and communication technology (ICT)-based approach among Somali refugees. This project will take place in the Somali refugee camps of Dollo Ado, Ethiopia, starting in August 2018. As a part of this new project, we are recruiting a Senior Radio Trainer to work with a team of Somali refugees to produce a series of podcasts on intimate partner violence.
Job Description:
The Senior Journalism Radio Trainer will contribute to the design of the radio podcast series. He/she will mentor and accompany the production team in the production of the podcasts in an interactive and iterative process. These activities will take into account evidence on factors that contribute to IPV among refugee groups. The Trainer will represent Fondation Hirondelle, its values, its mission and its program in Ethiopia.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for podcasting, with proven skills developing, reporting and producing radio programming on social and/or public health topics. The Senior Trainer will have experience working in East Africa, mentoring and training radio journalists, and the technical skills to produce high quality radio programming.
The assignment:
Development of podcast framework: 2 days, prior to deployment
The Senior Trainer will brainstorm and interact with multi-disciplinary study team to explore the underlying drivers of IPV as well as the social context affecting intimate partner relations in the refugee camp.
Training of community members: 10 days on assignment in Dollo Ado
At least two to three women and two to three men, for a total of five people from within the communities will have been selected for training as part of the project. Training will include basics of ethical, professional journalism, reporting for radio, audio editing for broadcast and podcasting, interview techniques, moderating discussions, research and sourcing as well as discussions around gender norms, IPV and other forms of GBV.
Development and pretesting of content using participatory approaches: to take place during the 10 days mission in Dollo Ado
The local community members will work with project staff to create and pre-test the podcasts. Participatory approaches led by the media trainer and including health and GBV experts, will be used to further shape the editorial content of the podcasts.
On-going mentoring: 5 days, editorial feedback, basic editing, from a distance
The Senior Journalism Radio Trainer will provide mentoring and editorial services throughout the period of production of the 10 podcasts.
Requirements:**
Minimum 5 years field experience training journalists in developing or crisis contexts
Demonstrated experience producing high quality radio programs
Experience in communicating with communities programming and/or media development desired and practice working in humanitarian situations or with refugees and IDPs a plus
Excellent coordination and communications skills
A problem-solver who is flexible, thrives in challenging contexts and works well under pressure
Experience working with Somali populations is an advantage
Fluency in English; Somali is a plus
